Otra ya no es cualquiera

Otra/Another had an impressive turn out on Friday the 10^th. The exhibition was finished that same day flawlessly and everything was set up for the opening at 8: p.m Maricela Jacobo the state director of the institute gave the inaugural speech and after Maricela's offical address, I mentioned and thank all the participants which included:

Johnston Mark Lee and Associates, UCLA, SciArc, Basica Studio, Teddy Cruz, Ted Smith, Mark Mack, TAAU, Tijuana Tec, ER Arquitectos and Fabrik78 who designed all the entry space graphics.

Later in the evening Mark Lee and Robert Somol gave a casual talk (with images) of their work. Somol, gave a brief introduction of Quick, Loose and Dirty, A Tijuana Novela, a research project in book format of his studio at UCLA of Tijuana in 2005. An interesting project that reinterprets Tijuana as a space of architectural and urban opportunity. A project that does not engage the city in the traditional way -intending to be prescriptive or romantic, but as Somol described “It is not what we can do for Tijuana, but what Tijuana can do for us”. The book has three main chapters - Quick, documentation of the expedient processes of growth and interchange and re organization of the city at micro levels (street vendors, signage, etc) to a macro view (demographics, informal and formal developments). Loose – Tijuana is within a hardedge, but operates with a loose center redefining the relationships between region/city, private/public, legal/ illegal. And last Dirty, a form of econo-logical practice where matters of reuse – recycling are reinterpreted as the new face of sustainability - yet brown (concentration of recombinant materiality and landscape of reuse) becomes the new green. Somol ends the presentation by saying, “Tijuana promises that it is possible to create something from nothing and anything from everything”. It is interesting that QLD – A Tijuana Novela, is a thesis on expediency therefore a useful tool for the criticism on intricacy and also catalogue of tricks for the progressive practice in contrast to the use of techniques of the critical practice. Therefore the research is also a stance within the discipline and its discontents – Tijuana at the end is an excuse.

After this brief presentation the gallery was open and more then 250 guests witness the work displayed in installation format and by project boards and models. One of the most impressive works was the installation designed and built by Johnston MarkLee and Associates, Critical Mass at the Fringe –made of approximately 2500 bottles with red and green liquid filled at different levels to create an undulating liquid graph around the four walls of an improvised room within the gallery. The graph documented with red liquid the population living in irregular settlements while the green liquid in the bottles graphed the population living in “regular” (legalized) settlements in Tijuana. A beautiful piece, that took one week to install, that creates a matrix and a sense that these forms of settlements will eventually transgress each others borders, boundaries and realities.

Continuing with our lecture series, Michael Bell will speak on Wednesday the 15^th at the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT). All translations in English will be simultaneously translated to Spanish with the support of the US consulate in Tijuana and CECUT.

Impresionante la asistencia en Otra/Another el viernes 10 de Noviembre. La exposición se terminó de montar el mismo día sin percances y todo estuvo listo para la ceremonia de apertura a las 8 pm. Maricela Jacobo, directora estatal del instituto dio el discurso inaugural y después del ‘speech” oficial de Maricela, yo mencione y agradecí a todos los participantes que incluyeron:

Johnston MarkLee y Asociados, UCLA, SciArc, Basica, Teddy Cruz, Ted Smith, Mark Mack, TAAU, ITT, ER Arquitectos y Fabrik78 que diseñaron todos los gráficos para el vestíbulo.

Más adelante esa misma noche Mark Lee y Roberto Somol dieron una charla informal (con imágenes) de su trabajo. Somol, dio una breve introducción de Quick, Loose and Dirty, A Tijuana Novela, un proyecto de investigación en formato de libro realizado en el 2005 por su taller en UCLA sobre Tijuana. Un proyecto interesante que reinterpreta a Tijuana como espacio de oportunidades arquitectónicas y urbanas. No es un proyecto que presenta a la ciudad de la manera tradicional - preponiéndose ser preceptivo o romántico, pero como Somol la describió “No es lo que nosotros podemos hacer por Tijuana, pero lo qué Tijuana puede hacer por nosotros”. El libro tiene tres capítulos principales - Quick, documentación de los procesos convenientes del crecimiento, intercambio y de la organización de la ciudad en los niveles micro (vendedores de calle, semiótica urbana, etc.) a progresos macro (demografía, desarrollo informal y formal). Loose – Tijuana se ubica dentro de un límite rígido, pero funciona con un centro flojo que redefine las relaciones entre la región/ciudad, privado/público, y lo ilegal/legal. Y por ultimo Sucio, una forma de práctica econo-lógica donde las materias de la reutilización - reciclado se reinterpretan como la versión alterna de lo sustentable – el café (concentración de la materialidad recombinada y del paisaje de la reutilización) se convierten en el nuevo verde. Somol termina la presentación diciendo, “Tijuana promete que es posible crear algo de nada y cualquier cosa de todo”. Es interesante que QLD – A Tijuana Novela, es una tesis sobre eficacia por lo tanto una útil herramienta para la crítica de lo intrico y también pretende ser un catálogo de trucos de las prácticas progresivas en contraste con el uso de técnica de las practicas criticas. Por lo tanto la investigación es también una postura dentro de la disciplina y de sus desacuerdos - Tijuana al final es una excusa.

Después de esta breve presentación la galería se abrió a más de 250 invitados a conocer el trabajo mostrado en formato de instalación, láminas y maquetas de proyectos. Uno de los trabajos más impresionantes fue la instalación diseñada y construida por Johnston MarkLee y Asociados, Masa Crítica en la Franja Fronteriza - construida de aproximadamente 2500 botellas de vidrio con líquido rojo y verde llenadas en diversos niveles creando una gráfica líquida ondulada alrededor de las cuatro paredes de un cuarto blanco improvisado dentro de la galería. Con el líquido rojo se documento a la población que vive en desarrollos irregulares mientras que el líquido verde representó a la población que vive en desarrollos (legalizados) “regulares” en Tijuana. Una pieza bella que tomó una semana para instalar, creando una matriz y un sentido que en el futuro estas formas de desarrollo habitacional van a transgredir sus fronteras, límites y realidades.

Continuando con nuestra serie de conferencias, Michael Bell hablará el miércoles 15 en el Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT). Todas las traducciones en inglés serán traducidas simultáneamente al español con el patrocinio del consulado de los E.E.U.U. en Tijuana y CECUT.
